Sail to Heal - Bereavement Support Group
For survivors of suicide loss, the journey of healing takes on many different shapes. Loss survivors face complicated emotions that may cause the period after a loss to be a painful and confusing time. Friends and family may not be entirely sure how best to offer comfort and support, which can lead suicide loss survivors to feel isolated or alone through their grief. They may not know anyone else who has ever been through this, and feel they have no one to talk to who can truly understand their experience.
Sail to Heal can aid loss survivors in feeling less isolated through interaction with a group of people who share similar personal experiences, offering validation that grieving is expected and acceptable. We strive to provide reassurance that healing is possible by introducing newer loss survivors to others who may be further along on their healing journey, providing an opportunity for loss survivors to speak openly with others who share similar experiences and truly understand, creating an opportunity for loss survivors to learn from each other.
The Sail to Heal support group will meet monthly and we will be incorporating experiential therapy into our sessions. In the spring, summer and early fall we will be sailing together as a group.
The support group will be co-facilitated by facilitators who are social workers, psychologists and individuals trained by the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and mental health professionals.
