FAQs
Is this a support group or a sailing outing?
This is a support group that goes out for a sail when it meets. Our belief is that getting out on the water provides a wonderful environment for the participants to relax in a safe space and benefit from the therapeutic value of sailing.
Do the participants actually sail the boat?
No. Our sailing outings are run by a Coast Guard-certified captain and volunteer crew.
What happens if there is inclement weather?
In the event of a weather cancellation, we will have a rain date scheduled.
How are the support group sessions run?
The support group will be a safe place where loss survivors can share their experiences and support each other. Meetings are co-facilitated by at least two individuals who are either social workers, psychologists or AFSP trained facilitators. We adhere to strict confidentiality and provide a non-judgmental, empathetic safe space.
How much time will the group be together on an outing?
Registration, group support session, sail and close of meeting will last approximately 3 to 3.5 hours.
Is the Bereavement Support Group Open or Closed?
Sail to Heal is an Open support group. Participants are required to confirm attendance at least 3 weeks in advance of meeting date.
How many participants are expected to participate in a session?
We expect to have 8 to 10 participants for the support group/sailing outing.
